The Viper Room Still Hums

The Viper Room Still Hums

8852 Sunset Boulevard. Speakeasy in the 1940s, mob jazz club, Depp's club in the 90s, site of River Phoenix's death in 1993. Current incarnation: small-capacity live music venue honoring the history without being suffocated by it. Under 200 capacity, booking rock and indie from emerging acts who play the Strip because it still means something to musicians.

The Sunset Strip has lost most of its legendary venues (the Roxy survives, the Whisky endures, the Rainbow feeds the faithful), but walking it at night with billboards glowing and clubs spilling sound onto the sidewalk, you get why musicians moved to LA: the dream that tonight's audience includes the person who changes your life.

Check for Monday residency shows — local acts playing the same slot weekly, building audience one Monday at a time. Looser than weekends, more personal, the crowd knows the songs.
