Santa Catalina Island by Ferry
Santa Catalina Island by Ferry
22 miles off the coast. Hour by Catalina Express from Long Beach, San Pedro, or Dana Point. By the time you dock, the mainland feels like a rumor. 76 square miles of undeveloped mountains and the town of Avalon, population of a neighborhood, charm of a Mediterranean village told to behave.
The Casino Building — not gambling but a 1929 Art Deco theater and ballroom, white rotunda visible from the ferry. Interior: pipe organ, hand-painted murals, watching a film feels ceremonial. Descanso Beach Club: bar service, kayak rentals, water so clear you see garibaldi (neon orange state marine fish) from shore. The interior is wild — bison roaming the hills (descendants of a 1924 movie herd), bald eagles, 38-mile Trans-Catalina Trail.
Ferry ~$80 round-trip, book ahead for summer. Golf carts are primary transport (cars restricted). Snorkeling at Lover's Cove is the best near-shore in Southern California. Full day minimum.
